NYSSA RALLIES AGAINST STATE "RAID" ON SNOWMOBILE TRAIL FUND

February 12, 2010, Albany, NY - Calling Governor David A. Paterson's state budget proposal, "a betrayal of the trust between his administration and our 150,000 members," the New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) vowed to fight a multi-year, multi-million dollar state raid of the snowmobile trail development and maintenance fund.

"The money in the trail fund is critical to support trail maintenance activities," said Michael Fischer, President of NYSSA. "It is money paid exclusively by snowmobilers for costs directly associated with the state and snowmobile club responsibilities for the development and maintenance of the statewide trail system. The state's attempt to take this money for other purposes could threaten the safety of the trail system and certainly the long-term viability of the trail fund," Fischer charged.

This unprecedented sweep is being proposed less than two years after a previous attempt to take $1 million during the 2008-2009 budget process was avoided with the understanding by NYSSA and its supporters that similar raids would not be attempted in the future. Governor Paterson stated in a press release at the time that the state would "ensure that money from these registration fees will be spent in a way that specifically benefits snowmobilers... solely on trail maintenance and related program activities."

UNREGISTERED SLEDS PDF Print E-mail

This season the registrations are far behind the normal numbers. As of last week there were only 50% of the anticipated yearly registrations. On average there are approximately 130,000 registered sleds in New York. If you see unregistered sleds using the trails we all need to remind them that they are taking trail maintenance funds away from Clubs. The law provides that a mandatory fine of $200 plus $85 sur-charge must be assessed for operating an unregistered snowmobile. That $200 fine provides that $100 be placed in the Trail fund and then we get the additional benefit of receiving the regular portion of their registration once they visit DMV. By training and working with Law Enforcement and the Local Courts, we are teaching them to that we do not tolerate unregistered snowmobiles on our trails. We do need their help in sup-porting trail development and maintenance by getting everyone to register. RIDE RIGHT, by registering. If registrations fall behind the expected 130,000 this season, it means there will be limited funds available for next year.

Trail Work Help in Sharon Springs PDF Print E-mail
Duane Spaulding wants to work on trails every weekend possible (weather pending) to get ready for riding.   We really need help from our members!  We have many miles of trails to clear before the snow flies and need lots of helping hands to get things done.  It’s a lot of work to prep for the season and the same handful of people can’t possibly finish it all up before it’s time to ride.
Please help us get our trails in tip top shape for this year.  If you can help out in any way, please call Duane at 518-234-8782.
